Pretexting

« Back to Glossary Index

Pretexting involves an attacker creating a believable story or identity to gain someone’s trust and extract information or access.

Why it matters:

  • Often used in vishing, help desk scams, or fake “IT support” calls.
  • Can bypass technical controls because the victim willingly provides access.

Pro tip: Legitimate organizations will never pressure you to bypass procedures — verify identities before sharing anything sensitive.
