Ransomware

« Back to Glossary Index

Ransomware is malware that encrypts files or systems, then demands payment (a ransom) to unlock them.

Why it matters:

  • One of the costliest and most disruptive cyber threats.
  • Can shut down entire businesses for days or weeks.
  • Paying the ransom doesn’t guarantee data recovery.

Pro tip: Backups are the best defense. With clean backups, you can recover without paying criminals.
